How to Improve Live Recording Quality (AI Upscale to HD, 2K or 4K)
You caught the live, the recording saved properly, and it still looks softer than you expected. Faces lose definition when someone moves, text on screen is hard to read, and dark scenes break into blocks.
This is one of the most common complaints about saved live video, and the cause is almost never the recorder. Understanding where the quality actually goes explains what you can realistically recover — and AI upscaling recovers more than most people expect.
Why live recordings look soft
A live broadcast is encoded for real-time delivery, not for archiving. The platform has to get video to thousands of viewers with no buffering, on connections it cannot predict, so it makes three compromises that permanently affect quality:
- Low bitrate. Live streams are compressed far harder than uploaded video. Detail is discarded during the broadcast itself, before any recorder sees it.
- Adaptive quality. When the creator's connection dips — they walk into another room, the venue Wi-Fi gets crowded — the platform silently drops resolution to keep the stream alive. That drop is baked into the broadcast.
- Motion penalties. Compression struggles with movement. A handheld phone in low light produces the worst possible input for an encoder.
A cloud recorder saves exactly what was transmitted. That is the correct behaviour — it means no generational loss and no interface overlays — but it also means a recorder cannot contain detail the broadcast never carried.

What AI upscaling actually does
AI upscaling does not retrieve the missing original pixels — nothing can. Instead it reconstructs plausible detail by recognising what the blurred shapes were meant to be, and then renders the result at a higher resolution.
In practice it does three things at once:
- Cleans compression artefacts. The blocky squares in dark areas and the banding in gradients are removed rather than enlarged.
- Rebuilds edges. Faces, hair, clothing seams and on-screen text regain definition instead of staying as soft gradients.
- Increases resolution. The output is rendered larger, which is what makes footage watchable on a tablet or television rather than only on a phone.

HD, 2K or 4K — which to pick
The enhancement is identical across all three. What changes is the output size, the file size and how long processing takes.

A practical rule: if you are going to watch it once on your phone, HD is enough. If you are keeping it, go 2K or 4K, because you only get to make this decision once per recording without re-running the job.
How to upscale a recording
- Open the recording in your library, from any platform you track — Instagram, TikTok, Twitch, Kick or X.
- Choose Enhance & Upscale. The panel explains that all options apply the same AI enhancement.
- Pick your resolution — HD, 2K or 4K.
- Confirm the job. You can pay for it or spend a free unlock if you have one available.
- Let it process. The job appears under Cut & Upscale Jobs and moves through Queued, then Processing, then Ready. You can close the app entirely; the work is server-side.
- Download the result. When the status reads Ready, save the enhanced file to your device.

Trim first, then upscale
This is the single most useful habit, and most people discover it late.
If you only care about a specific stretch of a long broadcast — the announcement, the performance, the part where something actually happened — trim that section first, then upscale the clip rather than the whole stream.
Two things improve immediately. Processing finishes far faster because there is less footage to work through, and you are not spending a job on ninety minutes of footage you will never rewatch. The trim and upscale tools live in the same place, so it is a single pass through the app.
When upscaling won't help
Being straight about the limits is more useful than overselling, so here is where you should expect modest results:
- Very dark footage. If the original was shot in near-darkness, there is little signal underneath the noise to rebuild from.
- Heavy motion blur. Blur baked in by camera movement is part of the image, not a compression artefact, so it stays.
- Unreadable small text. Upscaling makes text crisper and larger, but it cannot invent characters that were never distinguishable.
- Very old recordings. Streams captured before July 2022 exist only in a lower-quality master and are marked as SD in your library. Upscaling still improves them, but it starts from less.
Set the expectation correctly and you will be pleased: this is a real, visible improvement, particularly on compression artefacts and edge definition. It is not a way to turn a phone stream from a dim venue into studio footage.

Does upscaling replace my original recording?
No. The job produces a new file and your original stays untouched in your library, so you can compare the two or run a different tier later.
How long does an upscale take?
It depends on the resolution and the length of the recording. HD finishes quickest, 4K takes the longest. The job runs on our servers, so you can close the app and come back when the status reads Ready.
Do I need a subscription to upscale?
You can pay for individual jobs or use a free unlock if you have one. Free unlocks accumulate as you level up, so upscaling is reachable without a subscription.
Can I upscale a clip I already trimmed?
Yes, and that is the recommended order. Trim to the section you care about, then upscale the shorter clip.
Will upscaling fix a stream that kept buffering?
Partly. It cleans up the compression damage that buffering causes, which helps a lot visually. It cannot restore frames that were dropped from the broadcast entirely, because those were never transmitted.
